Case Studies

Royal BC Museum

Since 1886, the Royal BC Museum has been collecting, documenting, and safeguarding the natural and human history of British Columbia. Their website is an important expression of their mandate to share the story of B.C. at home and around the world. It's also a vital gateway to both the physical museum, and their extensive collection of artifacts.

As with many content-heavy sites, navigation and maintenance were perpetual problems for the Museum. Their old site, which was primarily static HTML, required technical staff to post all updates manually. As a result, ensuring that content was current, and presentation consistent was painfully difficult. In addition, years of rather uncalculated growth had resulted in confusing navigation, and a disjointed user experience.

Redengine began the redesign with two important pieces of research. First, a broad survey of museum sites helped us assess how similar organizations handled similar information challenges. Second, a large-scale online card sorting activity helped us to better understand how the Museum's customers think about site content, enabling us to devise intuitive new navigation.

Next, we transformed the stunning new visual design from Trapeze Communications into robust, standards compliant code. Finally, we powered the site with our very own Redengine Online Platform. This easy to use content management system allows non-technical Museum staff to quickly update the site, set publishing dates, and have content approved by managers before posting.

This world-class Museum now has a world-class website, and the tools they need to keep it that way. Staff has been quick to learn and adopt the content management system, and users can easily discover the richness of the site's content. The Museum has great plans for ongoing enhancements to the site, including a sub-site for the BC Archives, so we're really looking forward to seeing the evolution. Another great collaboration, thanks to the good folks at the Museum, the creative talent of Trapeze, and a few of us here at Redengine.

"With the incorporation of the Royal BC Museum, two distinct websites needed to be integrated; work flow needed to be enhanced and online entries needed to be delegated to business units within the year.   A seemingly impossible task!  Enter Redengine.  With their staff resources and the adoption of their application, we have created an integrated website focused on the end user; work flow and online entries are delegated tasks which have improved currency and relevancy of our information.  Users are happy; business units are happy and being on time and on budget made our financial services happy.  Redengine has great people and gives great results.
